Congratulations to senior Eliya Makabeh who was named a Coca-Cola Scholar semifinalist. Makabeh was one of 1,896 students selected out of 95,000 applicants to advance to the next stage of the selection process for the prestigious scholarship program. The scholarship recognizes exceptional graduating seniors for their academic excellence, leadership, service, and commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. Winners of the scholarship will be announced in March and receive a $20,000 award.
Makabeh was surprised — and excited to have been selected as a semifinalist. “When initially applying for Coca-Cola Scholars, I did not expect to be selected as a semifinalist, but decided to take a chance and apply,” said Makabeh. I'm extremely glad I took this chance, and I am very humbled and honored to have made it this far. I've learned the importance of putting myself out there and advocating for myself whenever given the opportunity to.”
Guided by a desire to help others, Makabeh has made an impact in school and in her community. She has been a member of Milken’s chapter of the National Honors Society (NHS) for two years, and she is currently the president and an NHS tutor. Through the Vatikim mentorship program, she is a peer mentor to the freshman. She has been involved with YOZMA, Milken’s social action leadership initiative, for three years and created the YOZMA veterans group, which she chairs. She is also a class council representative, a student ambassador, and founder of the Teens Helping Teens Club at Milken.
For three years, Makabeh has been a volunteer and listener at Teen Line, a teen to teen mental health line at Cedars-Sinai. At the Prins Lab at UCLA where she has worked for three years, she researches pediatric glioma stem cells, which cause brain tumors in children. She submitted her own full length scientific research paper to the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
A talented athlete, Makabeh has played on the Varsity or JV Volleyball teams for all four of her years at Milken. In the fall 2017 season, she was the team captain and most valuable player.
Even with all of the activities she participates in, Makabeh still finds time to work on developing her own company and mobile app to globally integrate social media, an online virtual closet, and retailers. Her future goal is to pursue a career that helps people and ensures their health and safety.
