Students Inducted into National Honor Society

Congratulations to the 35 Milken students that were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). In a ceremony held in the Middle School Community Room, the 22 seniors and 13 juniors were recognized and welcomed into the NHS before a roomful of current members, family, friends, and faculty on Monday, November 13. They joined nine seniors who were inducted last year.

The evening began with a reception where everyone mixed and mingled, while the Jazz Ensemble performed. The NHS Milken Chapter Presidents Alliyah Farahi ’18 and Logan Shalit ’18 welcomed everyone to the ceremony before NHS officers explained the four pillars of the NHS—scholarship, service, leadership, and character. They lit a candle to represent each one.

Nick Holton, Milken’s Positive Psychology and Positive Education Coordinator, spoke and challenged the inductees to live in an honorable way, expressing to them, “Honor is really hard. Honor is fleeting, something we're always chasing. In that way it's much like happiness I suppose. It's something we're constantly striving for but we're never really sure we have any of it, let alone enough of it.”

At the close of the ceremony, each of the inductees was presented with honor cords by NHS Faculty Advisor Amy Frangipane.

The NHS is the nation’s premier organization to honor outstanding high school students. It recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Among the activities that the Milken chapter participates in are peer tutoring and book drives. NHS students offer free peer tutoring in a variety of classes. According to new inductee, Eliya Makabeh ’19, who is a tutoring coordinator, students are matched with tutors who are knowledgeable in the subject and also are compatible personality wise.
