Faculty Member Receives Innovation Award Honorable Mention

Congratulations to middle school Humanities Department Chair Karen Nitzkin!
Karen received an Honorable Mention at the 2014 Digital Innovation in Learning Awards (DILA). EdSurge and Digital Promise announced the winners of the first DILAs, awards that celebrate teachers, administrators, and ed¬tech organizations who, every day, demonstrate exemplary practices in using technology to support learning.

After receiving more than 1,500 first-round applications and nominations from the U.S. and 31 other countries, and more than 550 video submissions, the panel of 10 DILA judges selected five finalists in each of the 15 award categories. The "Walk the Walk" award Honorable Mention recognizes Karen’s ability to lead by example by demonstrating her own meaningful use of technology.

Karen has integrated ed-tech tools into her classroom to improve literacy skills, including vocabulary, grammar, and to support reading comprehension as students move more toward digital reading (e.g. Membean, NoRedInk, ActivelyLearn, Newsela, and Noodletools).

Notes Karen: “Technology enhances so much of daily life. I am thrilled to bring that into my professional world as an educator!”
