MIX Makes Splash at Middle School

The first annual Milken Innovators Xpo (MIX) kicked off with great fanfare on Friday, March 20.
The festivities included engaging guest speakers, enthusiastic student presenters, a Kol Echad performance, and a flash mob!

The captivated crowd toured rooms that housed the nearly 200 science projects with topics such as Animal & Plant Science; Arts, Music & Film; Inventions and Innovations; and Sports Science, to name just a few. Students delivered concise presentations and answered questions about their projects as guests stopped by their booths.

Students diligently worked on their projects for the last seven months and many will continue their work. Several students will present their projects at the upcoming LA County Science Fair and SIGGRAPH 2015 (a conference on computer graphics and interactive design).

Projects were judged on criteria such as depth of investigation, visual presentation, workmanship, knowledgeable oral presentation, and originality. Middle school teachers judged the first round, while six outside judges joined in for the second round.

Says chief innovator of MIX, Marco Masoni, "I was proud to see how deeply engaged our students were in creative problem solving through their MIX projects. It tells me that we are taking the right approach with 'X' learning at the middle school, where we emphasize the multiplier effect that an interest and innovation driven education can have on student success."
