MilkenKnights Take Part in Regional Robotics Competition

Alyson Herfert
Team 1836: The MilkenKnights, Milken Community Schools robotics team, competed in the Rodenberry Foundation Los Angeles Regional for FIRST March 20-22.
This year's aerial assist competition was unique in its requirement to move a large exercise ball across the floor, pass the giant ball to other robots, and lob the ball over a truss and into high and low goals. Our team chose a unique design of a sling shot and was by far the best design ever created by The MilkenKnights.

However, through several set backs during inspector rounds, the padded frame around the exterior of the robot, known as the bumper, had to be adjusted by 1/8" and the pneumatic tanks around the robot had to be moved onto the frame. This caused the team to make many last minute decisions and adjustments missing out on a day of practice matches.

Some of those last minute changes resulted in faulty rewiring that made the robot immovable during early rounds. Unfortunately, even with expert mentoring and dedicated team members, The MilkenKnights fell too far behind to catch up.

We are proud to say that no one who competes in FIRST loses out in FIRST. As students learn about mechanized motion, electrical engineering, precision machine fabrication, and cooperation they grow, learn, and change in leaps and bounds over the course of six weeks.

Through many changes, this amazing team stuck together and brought home a robot they can continue perfecting in the post season. They look forward to pre-season competitions in the coming 2014-2015 school year.
